At one point, people believed that too many cardiologists and specialists were being trained to keep up with the shrinking number of jobs. However, a study conducted by the ACC revealed that all graduate fellows found a position and typically continued with a goal in medical practice

The job outlook for physicians in general is very good. The number of positions is expected to grow faster than average between now and 2014. A recent report shows that many medical students are choosing not to specialize in gynecology due to the high rate of malpractice.

There are about 650,000 practicing physicians of all specialties and more than half of them are primary care physicians. As many as one-third of today's practicing physicians may retire by the year 2020.
