The first question that is asked about meditation is the one which has no perfect answer. There is no universally accepted answer to the question just as there is no meaning of words like water, red and happy.

The first question that is asked about meditation is the one which has no perfect answer. There is no universally accepted answer to the question just as there is no meaning of words like water, red and happy.

The word meditation describes an act and a state of existence. Just as only a person who has seen the color red can describe it well, only a person who has performed this act and achieved the state can answer this question with authority.

However, the answer to this question is not important in so far as practicing mediation is concerned. All one needs to have is a general understanding of the term and its implications. Its actual meaning is best left to philosophers and theorists.

Meditation is an attempt to peek into our mind when it is devoid of all thoughts. Different methods of meditation seek to achieve the same goal, to understand and become aware of our mind.

More often than not, we confuse our mind with our thoughts. We speak about our mind when we are actually referring to our thoughts. It takes a lot of practice to understand the difference between our thoughts and the mind from where it originates.

Meditation is an attempt to reach the source of the thoughts and understand what it is and how it works. Needless to say, meditation is easier said than done. The following things occur the moment one attempts to meditate:

- Our mind becomes acutely conscious of our efforts to introspect and our sense organs become very active. We hear things normally ignored, we find it difficult to keep our eyes closed, and we pick up various scents and get distracted and stop introspecting.

- Our mind is filled with numerous thoughts the moment we try to clear them. Our attempts to order our mind to remain thought free leads to further thoughts and we finally give up without having succeeded in entering our minds.

- The mind becomes so relaxed that we soon fall into deep and relaxed sleep. This effective puts an end to our attempt to meditate.

So How Does One Successfully Meditate?

It is important to keep in mind that the journey is as important as the destination when one is meditating. Even attempts to meditate lead to greater awareness about the self. More often than not, even trying to meditate helps us clear mental cobwebs and relax.

In today's stressful world, spending a few minutes cut off from the world inside our mind often helps us relax. This is the primary reason why more and more people are turning towards meditation.

It is widely recognized as the most potent tool to combat stress, tension and anxiety. The combination of these three factors has the potential to be fatal. No amount of medication can provide the relief that meditation offers.

One thing that works in favor of meditation is that it has absolutely no negative effects. You may feel that you have not gained anything worthwhile from meditation but you certainly will not lose anything because of it.
