Parents are pre-occupied with school matters for their kids these days. But their kids are pre-occupied with social networking websites like Facebook, Farmville and Twitter. This is quite unfair because while their parents have their minds on their kids and their welfare, their kids have their minds somewhere else.
Even when both parents and children spend time together, parents are more focused on how to keep their kids in school. But kids have their minds on when they can have the break, vacant and school holidays to stay away from school works.
Psychologists may say that this should not surprise us. Kids are selfish and think only of themselves and what they can take from others for themselves. It's "me" and "I" first for them. Kids always think that others exist for their kids interests. The term responsibility does not mean anything to them.
This could be the reason why being grown up means one's response ability is already enhanced. It is unfortunate that many of our societal structures do not support parents and their efforts to promote instilling responsibility on their children. In fact, many of these structures only promote for kids to salivate more for the satisfaction of their egos.
These will be among the so many problems that teachers will face as they welcome these kids back to school. Not only will teachers focus on their classroom activities but also on extra-classroom activities to help them grow to be responsible citizens. It is therefore, important that parents help and actively lend a hand in supporting this role of teachers.
Let me suggest for our schools to unfriend the Facebook and the Friendster and uproot the Farmville from the school's computer systems and networks. This is in addition to keeping all mobile phones away from the classrooms.
These technological advancements do have benefits for our kids. But when you put them side by side with our teachers, our teachers are poor competitors for the kids attention and control. Excuse the quote but where two or three kids are gathered together, Facebook is in the midst of them!
Our school system can do better for the development of your kids future instead of friends on Facebook, kids are given better and more opportunities to develop friends and bond together as such in interpersonal ways. Instead of spending hours and hours on Farmville, kids should be made to do their hands-on gardening, home economics, animal raising and housekeeping.
