For some people being a virtual assistant is born out of necessity. Having lost their old jobs, and with no available jobs, they are forced to work as freelance workers. But of course not all virtual assistants are workers that can't get office work. There are many virtual assistants who are business owners themselves, running the VA services company from home.
The good thing about becoming a virtual assistant is that whatever skill you have, if you can contribute to a company with your skills, you can work as a virtual assistant. Virtual assistance is not just for workers that work as secretaries or office assistants.
Here are some of the things you might want to consider if you are thinking about becoming a virtual assistant:
What are the skills that you have and what kind of services can you offer- some skills are more in-demand than others. There are also some tasks that clients are willing to pay more for. So make sure that you have a good set of skills that you can offer your clients. If possible, upgrade your skills and learn new ones so that you can always offer your clients something more.
Think of the rates you will charge- do your research and study the rates that other virtual assistants in your area are offering. Compute your expenses for offering the service, the number of hours you are willing to work each day and the amount of work you need to provide clients to get the income you want.
Try to gain an understanding of the tasks involved in virtual assistance: these include typing, transcribing, data entry, and desktop publishing.
You need to have good communication skills- you may not have to work in an office anymore but you will still need to communicate with your boss (if you decide for a VA company), your clients and other people related to your business. You will need to talk to them through the phone or through other communication channels. In fact, you may have to talk to them even more to work out details of projects and transactions.
Make sure you have the equipment and the necessary tools to perform the job- you will need a dependable internet connection, a computer, and in some cases a telephone to be able to offer virtual assistance.
Should you work for a VA company or should you start your own- you can offer VA services two way: you can start your own company or you can join a VA company. Starting your own VA company means, all income and expenses are yours. You also need to market your own business. When you join a VA company, you get assigned tasks right away so you can start earning money right away. You just won't be able to charge a high fee for your services.
