Your resume writing format is more important than you may know. There are a few things that you will need to remember if you are to create a decent resume. The first thing of course being that you need to create a decent cover letter. The cover letter will let the employer know who you are. Yes, the actual resume is supposed to do just that, but to be perfectly honest, you can be a little more liberal when it comes to the cover letter.
The cover letter should be split up into three major parts. The first part should tell the potential employer who you are and what you have accomplished. You can talk about your education, but try not to talk too much about your personal life. The second part should talk about what you know about the company. There are many things that you should know about the company. For instance if they are about to perform a merger you should mention that and perhaps talk about your experience in that area. If they are launching a new product then you need to make sure you mention that as well. Finally you need to talk about what you plan to do for the company. What skills can you bring them? Why should they put you on their payroll?
These are all things that need to be though about extensively before you create the resume, because if you don't know yourself you can hardly know the company you want to work for. Also remember that you need to create a customized cover letter for each company that you apply at instead of creating a 'one size fits all' cover letter.
The next page of your resume is equally important because you need to make a list of your education, experience, and your skills. Your education should include your high school and any college experience that you might have had. Make sure you list whether you got a degree or diploma from each establishment and then move on to your work experience.
Something to note if you are an older worker is that you need to make sure you list your newest experience first. You really do not want to list every single place you've worked at for the past twenty years unless it is a short list. If it is a short list you may actually have some experience gaps which isn't going to work in any case.
